FEMA to Provide Assistance with Funeral Costs for COVID-19-Related Deaths

The staff at Alderson-Ford & Buckmiller Ford Mengacci Funeral Homes would like to remind families in the Greater Waterbury, Naugatuck Valley, and Cheshire communities that FEMA’s COVID-19 Funeral Assistance Program remains active through September 30, 2025.

Families who experienced the loss of a loved one due to COVID-19 on or after January 20, 2020 may be eligible for up to $9,000 in funeral reimbursement.

Authorized through the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 and the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, this program continues to ease the financial burden of honoring loved ones lost during the pandemic.

“While the height of the pandemic may have passed, its impact remains deeply personal for many in our community,” said Dan Ford, President of the funeral home. “FEMA’s assistance ensures that families can create a dignified and meaningful farewell without added financial strain.”

What Expenses Are Covered?

  • Funeral and memorial services
  • Burial, cremation, interment
  • Transportation, death certificates, and certain required fees

Eligibility Requirements:

To apply, families must provide:

  • Funeral expense documents (e.g., contracts, receipts) showing the applicant’s name, the deceased’s name, dates, and costs
  • Proof of any additional funeral funding received (e.g., insurance, government programs)
