NAUGATUCK — Valerie G. "Val" (Magdon) Cormier, beloved wife of Ron Cormier, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at age 69, on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at her home in Naugatuck.
Born in Derby on January 15, 1956, Val was a daughter of the late Frank and Betty Jane (Doran) Magdon. Along with her six siblings, she grew up in Bridgeport where she attended local schools, graduated from Central High School (Class of '74), and earned her Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN) at the University of Bridgeport. Proud of her chosen career, Val was a caring and dedicated R.N. for four decades, primarily in subacute rehab, until her retirement in 2021. A tireless nurse who gave it her all, she had held a variety of positions including supervisor and assistant director of nurses, but what she most enjoyed was taking care of people. A parishioner at St. Francis Church, Val was a devout Catholic who started each day with her prayer book in hand, praying for everyone she could think of. In her private life, she had simple enjoyments: watching a movie, journaling, a bag of pretzels, Coca Cola, Judge Judy, and Jeopardy. She loved swimming and the beach, butterflies, the color purple, family gatherings, Thanksgiving, and Christmas (especially the annual sing-along at Don & Dianne's).
She loved her husband with all her heart and always looked forward to their vacations in Acapulco. Valerie was truly a warm and wonderful woman.
In addition to her husband of 26 years, Val is survived by her sister, Margaret Magdon of Milford; her brother, George Magdon, and his wife Susan, of Stratford; brother-in-law, Mike Carrafiello; sister-in-law, Martha Magdon; 7 nieces and nephews — Brian Magdon, and his wife Kate; Christopher Carrafiello, and his wife Tanya; Katharine "Katie" Liphardt, and her husband Brian; Melissa "Missy" Carrafiello; Anthony Magdon, and his wife Danni; Max Bauscher, and his wife Kara; and Samantha Betulia, and her husband Jim; and 7 grandnieces and grandnephews — Jonathan Magdon, Vincent "Vinny" Carrafiello, Hannah Carrafiello, Teagan Liphardt, Jack Liphardt, Silas Magdon, and Salvatore Betulia. She was also much-loved and will be sadly missed by her extended Cormier family: her 8 sisters- and brothers-in-law — Stan & Jean Remiszewski, Dianne Bedard, Dennis Cormier, Joe & Jacquie Cormier, Dan & Donna Cormier; and another 47 nieces and nephews.
Val is now reunited with family members who she dearly missed and always prayed for — her parents; her 3 sisters, Carol Bauscher, Arlene Carrafiello, and Michele Smith; her brother, Frank "Junie" Magdon; two nephews, Tommy Bauscher and David Carrafiello; her father- and mother-in-law, Oneil & Lucille Cormier; three brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Bernard "Buddy" Bauscher, Oneil Cormier Jr., Donald Bedard Sr., and Ellen Cormier.
A heartfelt "Thank You" is extended to the compassionate and supportive doctors who cared for Val in recent years, especially Drs. Vincent Leone, Robert Botta, Kert Sabbath, Joe Morley, and Robert Matusz. She was truly grateful for all you did.
Arrangements - Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 on Sunday afternoon, July 27, at the Buckmiller Ford Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Avenue in Naugatuck. At 11:00 on Monday morning, July 28, Val's life will be celebrated with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Francis Church; and all are asked to meet directly at the church.
