Naugatuck - Sylvia Barnhart, 100, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 18, 2023, at her home surrounded by her family, friends, and dedicated caregivers.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, September 6, 1923, the daughter of the late Jussie and Ida Heikkila. She was predeceased by her husband Robert Barnhart.

Sylvia was a trailblazer being a graduate of Hunter College with a BS in Chemistry in 1946. She moved to Naugatuck to work as a Chemist at U.S. Rubber Company. She was active in community organizations but especially loved her participation in the Women’s Study Club and her Church. Over the past 70 years, Sylvia served in multiple roles at Hillside Covenant Church.

She is survived by her three children Richard, Elizabeth, and Robert (Mara); her three grandchildren Thomas (Renee), Daniel Vasseur (Angie), and Chris Vasseur; her great-grandchildren Tristan, Colton, Rylie, Charlotte, Cambria, and Ava.

Arrangements – A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, December 22, 2023, at 1:00 pm, at the Hillside Covenant Church. Burial will be private and there are no calling hours. The Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Naugatuck is assisting with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be sent to Hillside Covenant Church, 100 Hillside Ave., Naugatuck, CT 06770.
