Stephen Ushchak

Stephen Ushchak, a treasured father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on July 19, 2025, at the age of 92, surrounded by his beloved family on the cherished land in Cheshire that he called home for over 90 years. Born in 1933 in Yonkers, NY, he was the son of the late Michael and Mary (Heresko) Ushchak.

Stephen's early years were spent on his family's farm in Cheshire, later lovingly named "Strawberry Valley." This upbringing fostered a lifelong bond with the land and instilled in him a profound appreciation for hard work. With the support of his family, he built his home on that very land, where he and his beloved wife, Judith Gladys Rowe - whom he married in 1968 - raised their children. Judith (Rowe) Ushchak predeceased him in 2002.

A gifted and devoted carpenter, Stephen was a proud member of the Connecticut Carpenters Union, known for his exceptional craftsmanship and unwavering work ethic. He spent his days working as a carpenter and used his mornings, evenings, and weekends for strawberry or hay farming. Additionally, Stephen was a licensed private hot-air balloon pilot, embodying his adventurous spirit and love of flight.

Stephen’s life was exemplified by a deep Catholic faith, joyful demeanor, and a wonderful sense of humor that illuminated the lives of those around him. His belief in God shaped his values and the way he lived.

Stephen's love for music and community was evident in his passion for dancing the Polka and square dancing—activities that brought him immense joy and even led him to meet Judith. He was an active member of St. Bridget Church in Cheshire and St. Nicholas Church in Meriden, as well as a proud participant in the CT Lighter Than Air Society and the Connecticut Accordion Club, where he formed many lasting friendships and fond memories.

Some of the most treasured memories shared by his family are of skiing together as children –moments made even more special by the ski tow Stephen set up, bringing laughter, fun, and togetherness into their lives.

Stephen is survived by his three devoted children: Mark Ushchak and his wife, Eileen, of Colchester; John Ushchak and his wife, Silvana, of Plantsville; and Gladys Ushchak of East Hampton. He leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Tyler, Alyssa, Joslyn, Kayleigh, Nathan, and Trevor Ushchak. Stephen is also survived by his brother, Walter Ushchak of East Haven, and sister-in-law, Rose Ushchak of Cheshire.

He was predeceased by his brother, Theodore Ushchak; his sister, Mildred Parian, and her husband, Thomas; and his sister-in-law, Genevieve Ushchak.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Thursday, July 24, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Alderson-Ford Funeral Home, 615 South Main Street, Cheshire, CT 06410.
