Wolcott, CT Gerald F. “Jerry” Sheedy, 78, husband of Joyce (Landry) Sheedy, died peacefully on April 3, 2023 in the VITAS Care Unit at St. Mary’s Hospital surrounded by his wife and children.
Jerry was born August 24, 1944 in Derby, CT a son of the late Christopher and Barbara Sheedy and graduated from St. Francis Grammar School and Naugatuck High School. He attended Southern CT State University and graduated from the Computer Programming Institute. He started his career at the footwear division of Uniroyal, Inc., in 1962, then went on to become a system engineer for Uniroyal Headquarters in Middlebury, CT. Jerry then worked as a product manager at Essex Products Group, Centerbrook, CT, retiring in 2018 after 24 years of service.
Jerry was an avid sports fan of the Boston Red Sox, New York Giants, Boston Celtics, Notre Dame Fighting Irish College Football and UCONN men’s and women’s basketball. He enjoyed traveling to Ireland, Aruba, Florida, Canada and Cape Cod. He loved hunting in Maine, and he was a proud veteran, having served in the United States Army National Guard. Jerry was a member of the Franco American Social Club in Waterbury.
In addition to Joyce, to whom he would have celebrated 50 years of marriage with in May, Jerry is survived by his daughter, Heather Sheedy (Mike Obar); his son, Brendan Sheedy (Denise); his pride and joy, his three grandchildren, Riley Obar, Gavin and Carter Sheedy; his sister, The Honorable B.J. Sheedy; his sisters in law, Louise Sheedy, Patricia Sheedy, Joan (David) Steinman, Odette (Carroll) Theriault, Charlene Raymond, Claudette Landry and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, Jerry was predeceased by his grandson, Ethan Obar; his brothers, Christopher and Gary Sheedy, his twin brother, John Sheedy; his sister, Ann Fitzgerald and her husband, William Fitzgerald.
Jerry’s family would like to sincerely thank the staff in the VITAS Care Unit, the ICU and Sacred Heart 3 at St. Mary’s Hospital for the exceptional care and comfort that they provided to Jerry and his family. The family wishes to acknowledge with special thanks, Dr. H. Zhang and Dr. X. Weng.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11:00am at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 318 Church Street, Naugatuck. Burial with military honors will follow at St. James Cemetery, Naugatuck. Calling hours are Monday from 5:00 to 8:00pm at the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Avenue, Naugatuck. Members of the Naugatuck Veterans Council will assemble on Monday evening at 6:30pm. In lieu of flowers and to honor Jerry’s memory, donations can be made to the donor’s favorite charity.
