Naugatuck, CT Donald M. “Duck” Poynton, 90, died peacefully on February 20, 2023 at The Cottage in Torrington.
Don was born December 31, 1932 in Waterbury, CT a son of the late Michael Poynton, Sr. and Lucy (Errichetto) Poynton. Don was a proud United States Army veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War, retiring after 23 years of service with the rank of First Sergeant. He was a member of the CT National Guard and the V.F.W. Crusader Post 1946. Don retired from Summit Finishing, where he worked for 35 years.
Don was a proud Irishman and traveled to Ireland to research his ancestry. He enjoyed fly fishing and making his own flies; hunting, golfing and woodworking. When Don was younger, he ran the ski hut at Fairchild Park in Naugatuck. Don was a faithful parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church and often donated his time and materials to refinish religious items for the church.
Don is survived by his children, Donald M. Poynton, Jr. (Deborah), David L. Poynton (Emily) and Audrey M. Poynton (Kenneth Schanke); his grandchildren, Sarah Poynton (Mike Yablonski), Ashleen Whitaker (Dan), Marc Poynton, Bob Poynton and Bill Poynton; 8 great grandchildren; his sisters, Sharon Avitable and Kathy Remy; his brothers, Robert Poynton and Michael Poynton (Susan) and several nieces and nephews. Don was predeceased by his son, Robert J. Poynton and his sister, Patricia Regnald.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10:00am at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 318 Church Street, Naugatuck. Everyone attending is asked to please meet directly at church. Burial with military honors will follow in the CT Veterans Cemetery, 317 Bow Lane, Middletown, CT. There are no calling hours and arrangements have been entrusted to the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Avenue, Naugatuck. In lieu of flowers and to honor Don’s memory, donations are requested to the Wounded Warrior Project at www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
