West Hartland, CT David L. Poynton, 59, husband of Emily (Wilde) Poynton, died peacefully on March 17, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Dave was born October 8, 1963 in Waterbury, CT a son of the late Donald M. Poynton, Sr. and Carol (Boucher) Wiltshire. Dave was raised on Pond Street in Naugatuck and graduated from Naugatuck High School, Class of 1982. Dave began his professional career working at Summit Finishing in Thomaston and then worked at Avco Lycoming in Stratford. Dave then transitioned to working for the State of CT at the Department of Energy & Environmental Protection, where he was a valued member and coordinator for the Hazardous Material Response Unit. Dave worked at DEEP for 28 years. While at DEEP, Dave completed specific work related classes at UCONN, having received numerous certificates of excellence and then shared that knowledge by teaching classes in China.
For many years, Dave coached his daughters and umpired Girls’ Softball at the Union City Little League. He enjoyed golfing in the Naugatuck Elks Golf League for 18 years, having won 3 championships with his partner and lifelong friend, Scott Bosco. Dave enjoyed riding his Harley with his wife Emily, traveling, hunting, fishing, cooking and baking. Dave especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.
In addition to his loving wife Emily, Dave is survived by his daughters, Sarah Poynton (Mike Yablonski) and Ashleen Whitaker (Dan Whitaker); his step-daughters, Madeline Boutot and Briana Boutot, whom he loved and welcomed into the family; his grandchildren, Jack Yablonski, Aaron Yablonski, Emilee Whitaker and Benjamin Whitaker; his brother, Donald M. Poynton, Jr. (Deborah); his sister, Audrey M. Poynton (Kenneth Schanke); his nephews, Marc, Bob and Bill Poynton and several aunts, uncles and cousins. In addition to his parents, Dave was predeceased by his brother, Robert J. Poynton.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11:00am at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 318 Church Street, Naugatuck. Everyone attending is kindly asked to please meet directly at church. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, Cross Street, Naugatuck. Calling hours are Tuesday from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Avenue, Naugatuck.
