Pauline E. Coleman

WATERBURY - Pauline E. Coleman, 97, passed away Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late James “Bubby” Coleman.

Mrs. Coleman was born March 21,1926 in New York, N.Y., daughter of the late Samuel “Charlie” England and Winnifred A. Brown. She was a retired Child Care Provider.

Aunty Pauline was a strong woman, well known in the community in which she lived, for over 70 years. 1516 E 172nd Street was where she cared and cooked for family ,friends and community. She was a giver, the type of person that would give you her last. A woman who provided for her loved ones in need, and would get mad if you didn’t accept it. She loved to see people happy. She saved bottles for the homeless so they wouldn't dig in the trash. Recently a man she gave bottles to came to say his thanks for all her kindness that helped him along his way. One of her favorite past times was preparing meals. As a child I never saw Aunt Pauline sit and eat a meal but she always enjoyed watching us eat. She got a kick out of that. Oh, and peppermint balls were her favorite. Aunty had a quick wit and a snappy comeback for everything. One of her favorite phrases was “ Don't pluck my blasting nerve.” In her later days it was “ Hello somebody“. Aunty wanted to be strict, but was a marshmallow inside. She said what she meant and meant what she said. “I don't play,” but she played.

Pauline cared for her late husband Bubby up until his last day. That was when she retired. Auntie’s next pastime was the supermarket and getting her hair done. She loved her Scotch and Apple Martinis. Pauline would start the morning with her black coffee and an old-fashioned donut, onion rings for her snack and did not mind a hot wing from time to time. She loved going to the beach, having picnics, and spending time with her family at BBQ’S or reunions.

Mrs. Coleman leaves behind her son James Coleman, her grandsons, Andre, Troy, Derrick, Earl , Tony, Justin, her brothers, Ronald, Arthur, Lionel, Vernon, Anthony, Vincent, Martin, and her sisters Joan, Gloria, Brenda, Juanita, Cecilia, and Audrey. She will also be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, and many other loved ones., Mrs. Coleman was predeceased by her son Douglass Purdy, her sisters Muriel, Iris, Barbara, Lillian, and her brothers, Samuel, Desmond, Milton, Bernard, Charles, Philip.
