Mark James Gillis passed away on July 8, 2026, at the age of 70. He was the beloved husband of Anne Renee Cali Gillis, with whom he shared 39 wonderful years of marriage. Born on July 3, 1956, and raised in Stratford, Connecticut, Mark was the son of the late James and Roberta Gillis.
In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his children, James Gillis, Amy Paterno, Christie (David) Forero, and Jessica (James) Nadeau; and his cherished grandchildren, Paolo, Colton, Giada, Anderson, Stella, and Willow. He is also survived by his brother, Scott (Tina) Gillis; his sister, Elizabeth Lopez; his brother-in-law, Michael Cali; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Roberta Gillis; his parents-in-law, Joseph and Jean Cali; and his brother-in-law, Joseph Cali.
Mark dedicated 33 years of service to the United States Postal Service, where he built a career marked by hard work, leadership, and integrity. He began as a letter carrier in Bridgeport before advancing through supervisory and managerial roles. During his career, he served as Postmaster of Cromwell and Postmaster of Naugatuck before concluding his postal career in Labor Relations. Following his retirement, Mark established his own tax preparation business and volunteered at Heritage Village.
Mark found his greatest joy in spending time with family and friends. He was happiest on the golf course, handicapping horse races, taking cherished trips to Saratoga and Vermont, or simply gathered around the dinner table with those he loved. Mark and his devoted wife, Anne Renee, raised their family in Naugatuck, Connecticut, where they made their home for 37 years before moving to Southbury.
Mark will be remembered for his quick wit, sarcastic sense of humor, generous spirit, and unwavering devotion to his family and friends. Whether offering advice, sharing a laugh, or simply being there when he was needed, he left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. His kindness, laughter, and steadfast love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
In accordance with his wishes, Mark was an organ donor, providing a final gift of hope and healing to others. His family finds comfort in knowing that his generosity continues to touch lives, reflecting the compassion that defined his life.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Monday, July 13, 2026 from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Buckmiller Ford Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Ave., Naugatuck, CT. A Funeral Service will conclude the evening at 5:30 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mark’s name to: The Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund-PDJF, PO Box 910864, Lexington, KY 40591.
