June P. Macken

June Phyllis Macken, 97, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 30, 2023. She was born on April 29, 1926 in Lynn, Massachusetts.

June never knew her dad as he passed away 3 months before she was born due to war-related injuries. This spawned her desire to start writing to 69 servicemen during WWII. Many years later, she met one of those men and they became great friends. She was a life-long supporter of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).

After graduating from Peabody High School in Massachusetts, June worked as a claims adjuster at Liberty Mutual in Lynn. Here she met claims investigator David R. Macken. They married and moved to Connecticut in 1957. As their family grew, they began looking for a bigger home. On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in 1968, they found a house in Middlebury with a yard full of rose bushes and beautiful gardens. June fell in love and the house became the Mackens’ home for the next 55 years.

June was a teacher’s aide at Memorial School in Middlebury, CT before becoming a Court Reporter/Monitor at the Waterbury Superior Court where she worked until retiring in 1993. Upon retirement, she dabbled in Real Estate and sold her very first listing.

Along with her children, her home was her pride and joy. In addition to braiding rugs, she spent 5 weeks each year decorating her home for Christmas, mostly with a Victorian flair. She also made beautiful Victorian lampshades, many of which adorned her home in Middlebury.

Her very favorite moments in life were spent on the dance floor, from the first dance to the last, stopping only long enough to catch her breath.

She is survived by her children, Sharon G. Macken of Middlebury and her son, Dale Macken and his wife Anita of Manchester, CT as well as her grandchildren Jeff Macken and his wife Sarah of Wolcott and Kelly DePaolo and her husband Anthony also of Wolcott.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at the Middlebury Convalescent Home for the care and support they provided over the past couple of years.
