Josephine Sutila, age 100, entered into peaceful rest on September 24, 2024. She was born in New York City on October 14, 1923, to John and Josephine Serdoch, immigrants from Croatia. The family moved to New Haven, CT in 1940. Josephine married Frank Sutila in 1943 and they raised two children in Orange, CT.
Josephine grew up during the depression and despite being proficient in math, had no opportunity to continue her education. After her children were grown, she was employed at Yale University in the Alumni Relations Dept., retiring after 30 years. Josephine was known for her excellent money management abilities.
Following the death of her husband, she lived a life of giving to others; always financially generous to her children and grandchildren, and happy to bake pies, cakes and cookies for friends and great grandchildren. She was personally frugal, but very generous to family and friends; a truly giving person. Josephine was proud of her ability to garden, to keep an immaculate home and to be independent as she aged and reached her 100th birthday.
Josephine is survived by her son, Michael Sutila; daughter-in-law, Helen Sutila; grandson, Michael Patrick Sutila (Jessica); grandchildren, Jena Rosa and Jonathon Rosa; and two great granddaughters, Hailey and Aubrey Sutila. She is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Wawrzeniak; nieces, Veronica Butler, Barbara Belmont and Susan Lupoli; and nephews, Gerald Wawrzeniak, Richard Wawrzeniak and Joseph Walsh. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Sutila; her daughter, Janet Rosa; and her sister, Tina Rossi.
