CHESHIRE; John J. Elengo, 86 of Cheshire, passed away Tuesday September 17, 2024 at his home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Phyllis (Valenti) Elengo with whom he shared 58 years of marriage.
John was born February 21, 1938 in New Haven the son of the late John J. and Rose (Bozzi) Elengo, Sr. and was a longtime Cheshire resident. He was a 1955 graduate of Notre Dame High School and attended Lehigh University graduating in 1959 after earning his BSME. He later graduated from the University of New Haven earning an Executive MBA in 1979. John received a US Patent related to electronic measuring and weighing. He served for three years as a 1st Lieutenant during the Cold War, including service in Germany. John retired after a career in engineering and general management with international experience as the Vice President and Manager of Revere Corporation, where he traveled extensively through North America, Europe and Asia. While semi-retired he engaged in consulting with clients throughout the world including the US National Institute of Standards and Technology.
John was a former member and chairman of various standard making technical committees of the International Organization of Legal Metrology, the US National Conference on Weight and Measures and the Instrument Society of America. John’s hobbies include amateur radio with his US Callsign being W1DQ and USA Cycling sanctioned bicycle racing. He was also a Communicant of St. Bridget of Sweden Church, where he had served as an usher.
Besides his wife, he leaves his daughters, Christina Fournier (Eric) of Wallingford and Andrea Elengo of Cheshire, his sister, Louise Elengo of Hamden, his grandchildren, Danielle, Tyler, Madison, Maria and Noah, his niece and Goddaughter, Vannarose Elengo of Hamden, his son-in-law, George Fletcher and his sister-in-law, Laura Valenti. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Joseph Valenti.
Funeral services in celebration of John’s life will be held on Saturday September 21, 2024 beginning at 9:15 a.m. from the Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Cheshire 615 South Main Street and proceed to Saint Bridget of Sweden Parish–Saint Bridget Church 175 Main Street in Cheshire for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Prayers of committal and interment will follow in Saint Bridget Cemetery, Cheshire. Friends may gather at the funeral home on Friday September 20, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
