John "Jack" Bengtson

John “Jack” Richard Bengtson, 89, passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2026. He was born on October 17, 1936, in Waterbury, the son of Edward and Hannah Bengtson.

Jack attended Hamden Hall Country Day School and graduated from Cornwall Academy in Great Barrington, MA. He worked for the Community Workshop, Easter Seals in Waterbury, and Friendly’s Ice Cream in Cheshire.

Jack loved Cheshire and considered everyone his friend, and the people of Cheshire were good to him.  He also enjoyed the activities and his lunch at the Cheshire Senior Center.

The last thirteen and a half years of his life, he lived at Elim Park, where he was happy and received wonderful care.

The "Band O'Brothers" folk band wrote and recorded a song about him called “Walkin Jack”.

He is predeceased by his parents, Edward and Hannah Bengtson. He is survived by his brother Bill, sister-in-law Cae; nieces Cristin Cunnington and her husband Todd, nephew Mark Bengtson, great niece Eva Cunnington, and many cousins.

Funeral service and burial in Cheshire Hillside Cemetery will be held at the family's convenience. Contributions in Jack’s memory can be made to the Cheshire Senior Center or to the First Congregational Church.
