Rev. Dr. John Afman, Jr.

Rev. John Afman, Jr., 86, of Cheshire, CT, was called home to the Lord on December 31, 2023, after a brief illness. Born in Grand Rapids, MI, John earned degrees from UCal Berkeley, Princeton Theological Seminary, and Colgate Rochester Divinity School. John was ordained in 1963, and over his career led congregations in New York State, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. His devotion to preaching and pastoral care continued well into his 80s. He also had a second career as a marriage and family therapist. He served in the U.S. Army in the late 1950s. John was an avid reader, writer, and educator who enjoyed travel and rooting for his favorite teams such as the Detroit Tigers, Michigan Wolverines, and UConn Huskies.

John is survived by his wife of 35 years, Sue Chatfield of Cheshire; ex-wife Joan C. Afman, Tequesta, FL; sister Ruth Muir, Toccoa, GA; sister Barbara Vickers, San Carlos, CA; son Dane Afman, Silver Spring, MD; daughter Melinda Shoals, Bedford, NH; daughter Heather Wichman and spouse James Wichman, Southington, CT; daughter Sarah Beckman and spouse Mark Beckman, Granville, MA; stepson Jeffrey Foote and spouse Colleen Foote, Meriden, CT; and seven grandchildren. He is predeceased by sister Beverly Dickenson of Antioch, CA.
