Howard Dickerman Hoyt, 73, of North Haven, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on Friday, September 12, 2025. He was born November 16, 1951, the son of Vivian Dickerman Hoyt and Elwood L. Hoyt Sr., both deceased. Howie grew up in both the Hamden and Cheshire communities with a strong sense of family, loyalty and humor that carried through his entire life.
After graduating from Cheshire High School, he followed his life’s ambition of working in the family business, Eastern Fuel of Hamden. Over 50 years, Howie held almost every position at the home heating oil company, starting off assisting his parents wherever he was needed; splitting and stacking firewood, delivering home heating oil and repairing heating equipment. Eventually Howie moved into the office where he successfully grew the business alongside his brother Woody. Howie loved the family dynamic of Eastern Fuel and was extremely proud when his son Jonathan, daughter Jaclyn and son-in-law Cameron carried forward the company into it’s 5th family generation. Howie’s focus on relationships allowed him to build an extremely loyal and talented staff where the line of employee/family member was intentionally blurred.
Family was everything to Howie. Sunday dinners, playing cards, weekend rides with his kids on the oil truck, ice cream with grandchildren, perfect attendance at swim and track meets; no matter the reason, Howie loved any reason to spend time with his loved ones.
Howie enjoyed rooting for his beloved Boston Bruins, New York Yankees and New York Giants. His ultimate passion though was his friendships. His ability to find common interests with people was a true art, that allowed him to not only keep in touch with childhood friends but also to make new friends wherever he was, even during his final days. Building lifelong friendships with his employees and customers, socializing with former classmates over dinner, tournaments with his golf buddies and a lifetime of laughs with his friends from Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. Wolfeboro was extremely special to Howie, and he loved sharing his vacation spot of 70 years with his friends and especially his family. A sunny boat ride on Crescent Lake and Lake Wentworth, with his kids and grandchildren, stopping at all of his friends’ houses was absolute perfection.
Howie is survived by his daughter Jaclyn Condon (Cameron); granddaughters Vivian and Evelyn Condon; grandson Grant Howard Condon; brother Elwood Hoyt (Sandy); niece Penny Geyer (Gerry) and grandniece Kelsee Geyer; his beloved caretaker Susan Blake; and many extended family members and friends.
He was predeceased by his cherished son Jonathan Dickerman Hoyt.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2025 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Alderson-Ford Funeral Home, 615 South Main Street, Cheshire. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, September 19, 2025 at 11:00 am at Alderson-Ford Funeral Home followed by burial at Mount Carmel Burial Ground. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Howie’s memory to the American Kidney Fund.
