George A. Smith

George A. Smith passed away peacefully at home on June 23, 2026, surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Diane, his best friend. He is also survived by his son, Christopher Smith of Greenfield, IN, his daughter, Lisa Rossoni, and her husband, Michael of Cumberland, RI, and his cherished grandchildren, Tessa and Brandon. Additionally, he is survived by his sisters, Dee Smith of Cheshire and Holly Smith of Southington; his many cousins; and his two chihuahuas, Alice and Trixie, who loved him dearly and miss him already.

George retired from the Town of Cheshire Public Works Department in 2023 after 20 years.

In his youth, George loved playing ice hockey on many different teams in Cheshire, including the first varsity team for Cheshire High School.

After marrying Diane and having kids, they spent much time as a family in Washington, NH, camping in the summer and snowmobiling in the winter. The people there are so special. They all welcomed us as family, he said it was like his second home.

George played for many years with the Cheshire Softball League for Constitution Mortgage, Boemmels, and Seafarer with a great group of guys he was friends with for life.

He spent many years working as a pit crew member on the “Absolute Pleasure” alcohol funny Car, with his friend Danny, racing throughout the eastern part of the US.

George could often be found riding his Harley Davidson with the group of brothers who have been like family to us for over 30 years, whether it be on a 10-day trip or just a Sunday ride with the guys, he and Diane riding on their Trike. The memories are forever.

George and our family would like to thank Dr. Lourdes Mendez and her wonderful group of specialists and nurses, along with Dr. Stuart Seropian and his group of caring, talented people at Smilow Cancer Hospital, and Dr. Merceditas Villanueva of Yale Medicine. They never gave up on him. Thank you to the wonderful nurses on North Pavilion 7th, 11th, and 12th floors; you meant the world to George and our family. Thank you also to Masonicare of Wallingford for all their help and care. George said to say, “I hope I didn’t leave anyone out.” He fought a fierce battle with leukemia for 1 ½ years. We love all his friends, family, our wonderful neighbors, and caregivers who loved and supported him and our family throughout the years. George said, “I love you all!”
