Erna Storm

CHESHIRE- Erna M. Storm, 97, passed away Saturday March 8, 2014 at Southington Care Center surrounded by loving family. She will be remembered as a wonderful caring mother, grandmother and friend and will be greatly missed.

She was born April 29, 1916 in Kiel, Germany daughter of the late Rudolf August and Elizabeth (Scharping) Weinert, and lived there thru World War I and II where she trained as a gourmet cook as part of her schooling. As a result of her hard work scaveging for leftover crops in harvested fields, finding fuel crumbs along railroad tracks, chopping down trees in nearby forests, and her ability to grow food, sew and make clothes, and raise chickens and rabbits, she and her sons survived the extreme shortage of food, clothing and fuel during the war and post war period in good health.

At 35 in 1951, she brought her children to American for a better life. She subsequently lived in Hopewell Jct, NY; and 3 New York City Buroughs until she retired from her job of more than 20 yrs. at the Metropolitan Life Ins. Co. in 1981 whereupon she soon moved to Cheshire, CT.

There she became a member of Cheshire Lutheran Church and also the Cheshire Senior Center, where she displayed an amazing talent for painting in their painting class and where she volunteered her sewing skills making 100's of items for their Craft Fairs. She proceded to use her gardening skills not only for growing food but also for beautifying her surroundings. She soon used crochetting skills to provide her family with beautiful afghans and bedspreads and, with her cooking training, she provided them with delicious meals, jams, jellies and juices.

She is survived by two sons: Manfred and his wife Frances Storm of Cheshire, and Bodo and his wife Joan Storm of Saratoga Springs, NY; four grandchildren: Gregory and his wife Daniele Storm of Southington, CT, Thomas and his wife Laura Storm of Wallingford, CT, Karyn and her husband Jan Skrlj of Clifton Park, NY, and Jennifer Storm of Cambridge, NY; and seven great grandchildren: Kaylee Nicole, Jack and Samantha Storm of Southington, Mia Bella and Anna Bella Storm of Wallingford, and Jake and Alina Skrlj of Clifton Park. Erna was predeceased by three brothers: Robert, Richard, and Heinrich Weinert, and a sister Margaret Brech, all of Kiel, Germany.

The family would like to express their sincere thanks the staff of Southington Care Center for the exceptional care given to Erna for the past two years.
