Cheshire - David P. Johnston, 92, passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at MidState Medical Center in Meriden after a brief illness. He was the husband of Eunice (McBride) Johnston.
Mr. Johnston was born April 12, 1934, in Waterbury, the son of the late Harold and Evelyn (Porter) Johnston. He graduated from Suffield Academy, Storrs, CT and University of Bridgeport with a BA degree in Journalism.
Johnston began his newspaper career at the Meriden (CT) Record-Journal before being drafted into the Army in 1958 where he served at Fort Bragg, NC. After his discharge he began work at the Waterbury Republican-American as a reporter for the Naugatuck office, and was made an editor for the morning paper. He left the Waterbury paper briefly to edit the Milford (CT) Citizen to make it a daily edition publication. He returned to the Waterbury Republican-American and became its managing editor. His final career move was to work for Zackin Publications trade magazine where he edited the “Dry Cleaning News” and “Alternative Energy Retailer.”
Johnston was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Plymouth, CT serving as council president, finance chair and choir member. He also volunteered his time as a mentor for SCORE in Waterbury and served on the board of directors for Robin Ridge Apartments.
His hobbies were gardening and reading. He was a life-long Red Sox fan and enjoyed watching the Connecticut Huskies.
Besides his wife of 65 years, Mr. Johnston is survived by his son Bruce Johnston (Hana Kim) of Bradenton, FL and daughter Laurie Johnston of East Lyme, CT; six grandchildren, Michael Johnston, Nicholas Johnston, Alicia Johnston, Zachary Blanchette, Hannah Kenniston, and Romeo Goldreich; and 3 great children, Brooks, Quinn, and Andie Johnston. David was predeceased by his son Steven Johnston who passed away in 2023.
Arrangements – A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 12, at 11:00 AM at Nelson Hall at Elim Park Place, 150 Cook Hill Rd., Cheshire. Committal will be held at the convenience of the family, and there are no calling hours. The Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Cheshire is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Elim Park Benevolent Fund.
