Barbara Welton

Barbara Ann Welton, age 91 of Cheshire, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2025 after a period of declining health. Born on December 4, 1933, in Waterbury, Barbara lived a life full of adventure, laughter, and love, touching the hearts of everyone she met. She was the daughter of the late Harold and Anne (Masley) Hubert.

A graduate of Waterbury Catholic High School, Barbara was a cherished parishioner of St. Bridget Church for over 50 years. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she actively prayed to St. Lucy, St. Rita, and St. Anthony, always seeking blessings for others. Barbara was a whirlwind of energy, always on the go and in constant motion, bringing joy and positivity into the lives of those around her.

Barbara dedicated 27 years of her career to St. Mary’s Hospital, where she shared her expertise as an X-ray technician, mentoring many students along the way. She then worked until age 79 at the Cheshire Correctional Complex, where her passion for teaching continued as she imparted valuable life skills to the inmates, including sewing. A talented seamstress, Barbara had made many of her children’s outfits when they were young, even tailored coats.

Barbara included doing the Jumble word game in her daily routine, first in the newspaper, then in the last few years, on her cell phone. She was often on the phone, keeping in touch with family and friends, or hosting a gathering around her dining room table. She had been a member of the Red Hat Society, an avid bridge player, loved to swim, and read every night. Barabara’s magnetic energy and humorous spirit created lasting friendships, resonating deeply with everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Barbara is survived by her loving sons, Franklin “Frank” (Joyce) Welton II of New Boston, NH, and Charles "Chas" Welton of Cheshire; daughters, Barbara (John) McCarthy of Plymouth, NH, Deborah (Jeffrey) Boislard of Bristol, NH, and Sandra Welton of Cheshire. She also leaves her cherished grandchildren, Brooke, Jill, Josh and Nate; and her great-grandchildren, Aaralyn, Gavin and Hayven, and Everett and Maisie; and her special friends and next-door neighbors Lisa, Kellie and Liam Moran, who are part of the family.

Barbara is also survived by her sister, Ellen Phelan of Watertown (whom she spoke with every evening); her brother, Thomas “Tom” (Melanie) Hubert of Terryville; and loving nieces and nephews Ella, Becky, Mary, J.C., Bill, Jack Jr., Bill, Julie, Katherine, Kathy, Leann, Dorothy and Sarah. Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Franklin H. Welton; her brothers, Harold "Harry" Hubert, William "Bill" Hubert, Jack Hubert, and George Hubert; her niece Suzanne, her nephews Harry and Kevin, her sister-in-law Eleanor Gager; and her life-long best friend, Fran Nyberg.

The family would like to give special thanks to Silah Larson and to Barbara’s friend Dianne Mongillo for all their care, love and support, especially in Barbara’s final days.
