Barbara Frances (Hummel) Schumann, 86, a longtime former resident of Cheshire, beloved wife of the late Roger Schumann, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2025 at Elim Park after a long battle with dementia.
Barbara was born on February 16, 1939 in Hartford, to the late Eugene and Mary (Pieniak) Hummel. She was raised in the Bronx, NY, and spent childhood summers at Ball Pond in New Fairfield. Barbara resided in Cheshire since 1966 where she was a devoted parishioner of St. Bridget Church and served on their Ladies Guild. She was also a volunteer at Mid-State Medical Center in the Gift Shop for over 10 years and a member of the Berlin Red Hatters.
Barbara loved her NY Yankees and grew up attending their games at Yankee Stadium. She was an avid reader and enjoyed card games, needlework, antiques, puzzles, and especially traveling with her family.
Mrs. Schumann is survived by her sons, Andrew (Lori) Vignola Jr., of Wallingford, and Robert (Kristen) Vignola, of Cheshire; daughter, Ellen (Mark) Peterson, of Newington; grandchildren, David Peterson, Matthew and Christopher Vignola, and Elizabeth and Jennifer Vignola; cousins, Debbie Dubien and Douglas DeGray; as well as many extended family and friends.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Elim Park for the compassionate care given to Barbara.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Wednesday, November 5, 2025 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Alderson-Ford Funeral Home, 615 S Main St., Cheshire. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. that morning at St. Bridget Church, 175 Main St., Cheshire. Burial will follow at St. Bridget Cemetery, Higgins Rd., Cheshire.
