Arlene Bernstein, age 78, of West Hartford passed away on Sunday, November 7, 2021 at UConn John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington. She was the devoted wife of the late Elliot Bernstein for over 15 years. Arlene was born on April 20, 1943 in Hartford, daughter of the late Harry and Betty (Ruchin) Blum.
Arlene enjoyed trips to the casino, Cape Cod and the beaches close to Mitchell College in New London, where Elliot had attended, and they both took pleasure in traveling together. Over the years, Arlene raised dogs and worked for the ASPCA, taking in more animals then letting go. Most of all, Arlene treasured being a grandmother.
She is the beloved mother of Lisa Gittleman and Helene Ganezer and her husband, Lawrence, all of Southington. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Alexandra Gittleman of Croton-on-Hudson, NY; and her four cherished grandchildren, Michaela and Marissa Ganezer and Daniel and James Gittleman. She was predeceased by her first husband, Marvin Gittleman, her son, David Gittleman and her brother, Morton Blum.
A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, November 12, 2021 at 12PM at the CT State Veterans Cemetery, 317 Bow Lane, Middletown, CT 06457. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 280285, East Hartford, CT 06128-0285 Shiva will be observed over the weekend at the family home.
