Antonio S. Gomes, 87, of Cheshire, CT passed away peacefully on August 26, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Antonio was born on November 8, 1937, in Nogueira de Boticas, Portugal to the late Domingos Vaz and Ana Luiza Gomes. He is preceded in death by two sisters, Diolinda and Maria, who died in childhood.
Antonio emigrated to the U.S. at age 16. He went back to Portugal to marry Teresa Gomes Monteiro in 1962. They then came to the U.S. to achieve the American dream – to create a better life for their future family. Antonio was a member of the Union of Operating Engineers for many years and was successful in various business ventures. He was also a talented handyman and could fix or build anything, such as kitchens, electrical, plumbing, and automotive. He was always happy to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it.
In his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family, and his winters in Pompano Beach, Florida. He also enjoyed tending to his garden, and various projects at home.
He is survived by his three loving daughters – Ana Marie Gomes (Gualberto) of Milford, CT, Aida (Shaun) Gallagher of Cheshire, CT, and Julieta (Jeff) Russitano of Cheshire, CT. He has six grandchildren: Jeffrey, Ryan, Gabrielle, Katie, Christopher, and Daniel.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Friday, August 29, 2025 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Alderson-Ford Funeral Home, 615 South Main St., Cheshire, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:15 a.m. at St. Bridget of Sweden Parish, 175 Main St., Cheshire, CT. Burial will be at St. Bridget Cemetery, Higgins Rd, Cheshire, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Franciscan Home Care and Hospice Care, 267 Finch Avenue, Meriden, CT.
