NAUGATUCK- Mr. Robert John Platzer, 64, of 39 West Hills Terrace, Naugatuck, died unexpectedly Sunday July 12, 2009 shortly after arrival at the Hospital of Central Conn.-Bradley Campus.

Mr. Platzer was born in Highland Park, Ill., a son of the late Rev. Hans K. Platzer, former Pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the late Edith E. (Meyer) Platzer and had been a Naugatuck resident since 1959, moving here with his family from Nyack, N.Y. He was educated in the local school system and was a graduate of Naugatuck High School, Class of 1962 and of Hartwick College, Class of 1967 with a Batchelor of Arts degree. He was also a graduate of Danbury Hospital School of Medical Technology with concentration in Pathology, and was a ASCP Registered Medical Technologist. He first taught secondary science at Bristol Central High School for two years and then was employed at St Mary's Hospital, Yale-New Haven Hospital and by the State of Conn. for over 20 years at Southbury Training School until his retirement.

Mr. Platzer was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and had served as a member of the Board of Elders. He had also been active with the Naugatuck Community Choir and the Shelton Civil Preparedness Ham Radio Operators.

He leaves one brother Martin M. Platzer of Duluth, GA and his wife, Kay; two nieces, Katherine and Jennifer Platzer of Duluth.

His funeral will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at 10 am from the Alderson Funeral Home of Naugatuck, 201 Meadow St. and proceed to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 350 Millville Ave., Naugatuck for services at 11 am. Burial will be in Grove Cemetery, Naugatuck. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 10 am until the procession leaves for church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the A. W. Meyer Scholarship Fund c/o the Education Foundation of St. John's Alumni Assoc., P.O. Box 376, Winfield, KS 67156-0376.
