Edwin Francis Carney

Southbury- Edwin Francis Carney, 94, passed away Friday, January 26, 2018 at the Lutheran Home of Southbury. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 67 years, Lois (Cameron) Carney, in 2015.

Ed was born February 18, 1923 in Waterbury, son of the late Elwood and Helen (Kerrigan) Carney. He attended Leavenworth High School in Waterbury and the University of Maryland. Ed and Lois lived in Waterbury until his retirement in 1985.

He was a United States Army veteran, proudly serving in World War II. He owned and operated the Carney Dental Lab for over 40 years prior to his retirement. In later years Ed and Lois enjoyed being active members of the Prime Timers of Warren.

Ed was a man of many talents. He was a skilled musician, auto mechanic, outdoorsman, artist and woodworker. Some of his accomplishments include restoration of his 1962 Alfa Romeo Giulietta, producing numerous fine furniture pieces for family and friends and creating swords, stilts, paper airplanes for his young grandchildren. Despite his busy work schedule, he always had time for weekend family camping adventures.

One of the greatest challenges of his life came when he patiently and lovingly served as Lois’s caregiver during her 10-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He kept a promise he made to Lois to care for her at home until it became impossible, even with support of skilled nursing help. They both moved to the Lutheran Home of Southbury in 2015 where he stayed by her side until the end.

Mr. Carney is survived by his two sons, Keith and his wife Dee Carney of Brookfield, S. Michael Carney of Thomaston, a daughter Pat and her husband Sam Sarvis of Bangkok, Thailand; five grandchildren, Patrick (Shelly) Carney, Sean Carney, Luke Sarvis, Rachel Sarvis and Joshua (Karina) Sarvis; four great grandchildren, Rowan and Ian Carney, April and Liam Sarvis. His tremendous kindness also made a surrogate grandfather to Lily, Liam and Logan Robb. He is also survived by numerous caring nieces and nephews. He will also be sorely missed by his beloved Pug, Marcus. He was predeceased by his son Thomas J. Carney, a brother, James T. Carney and sister Frances Colligan.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the excellent and compassionate care Ed received at the Lutheran Home of Southbury and to the special caregivers who made it possible for Ed and Lois to remain in their own home for as long as possible.
