WALLINGFORD - Douglas R. Morrill, 85, passed away August 4, 2021, at the Regency House in Wallingford.
Mr. Morrill was born in Marshfield, Massachusetts to D. Russell Morrill and V. Erma Morrill. He is survived by his daughter Mia Donnelly of New Haven, his sister Barbara Morrill of Redwood City, California, his brother Richard of Richmond, Virginia, and his nieces Kirsten Morrill Rye of Concord, Massachusetts, and Amy Morrill Bijeau of Washington, D.C.
Doug completed grade school and high school in Hingham, Massachusetts. After attending Boston University and serving in the armed services, he began his work in industrial and retail sales. He also became a devoted sponsor of individuals who were in recovery in the New Haven area. Doug enjoyed relationships with his friends and family, and always displayed a lively and ironic sense of humor.
From his earliest days, Doug had a passion for the visual and musical arts, especially jazz. He also found great personal satisfaction in metal and wood sculpture as an amateur artist. His deep commitment to jazz, jazz musicians and African American contributions to jazz, resulted in his becoming one of the founders and leaders of the annual Jazz Haven festival in New Haven. He also led and volunteered at arts organizations such as Artspace. He and his recently deceased wife Danielle Santal Morrill, former professor of French at Southern Connecticut University, became robust world travelers in their retirement, often visiting Danielle’s family in her native France. In their voyages around the globe, they often focused on the museums, and music and culture of the diverse locations that they visited.
Doug was cared for by the devoted and skilled members of the nursing and recreational staff of Regency House in Wallingford, including the thoughtful and caring nurses including Diane who supported him in hospice care.
Arrangements: Services for Mr. Morrill will be private and burial will be at the convenience of his family. There are no calling hours and The Alderson-Ford Funeral Home, 615 South Main Street, Cheshire, Ct. is assisting with his arrangements.
