Charles Baummer

We mourn the passing of Charles J. Baummer, age 79, on July 31, 2009.

Charlie was born in Waterbury, Connecticut on September 14, 1929, the son of the late Charles and Mildred (Moore) Baummer of Naugatuck.

He attended Naugatuck public schools and spent two years serving his country in the U.S. Army and six years in the U.S. Navy. In the Navy, he served aboard the destroyer U.S.S. Stormes as a Gunner's Mate 2nd Class. He took part in the battle for Wonsan Harbor in North Korea in 1952, for which he received the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean Service Award along with other medals. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 8075, where he served as Vice-Commander..

Charles also worked for twenty-two years as a letter carrier in the Naugatuck branch of the United States Postal Service until his retirement in 1988. He liked to travel and enjoyed fishing, hunting and working in the yard.

He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Ruth (Houlihan) Baummer and their two children, Cheryl Campbell of Naugatuck and Brian Baummer of Bloomfield. He had four loving grandchildren, Michael, Kathryn, Morgan and Connor Campbell. He is also survived by a sister, Ruth Hubyk of Crystal River, Florida, and two brothers, Leroy Baummer of Naugatuck and Clayton Baummer of Prospect, and several nieces and nephews.

Charlie's family would like to thank all the people at Beacon Brook Health Center for their help, care and kindness and to our neighbors for their concern and generosity.

Funeral services for Mr. Baummer will be held at the Alderson Funeral Home of Naugatuck, 201 Meadow Street on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at 10:00 a.m.. Burial with full military honors will follow at the Southford Cemetery in Oxford. Friends may call at the funeral home in Naugatuck, on Monday, August 3, 2009 between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Charlie's name to Griffin Cancer Center, 38 Seymour Avenue, Derby, Connecticut 06418, or the Naugatuck Visiting Nurses Association, 600 Rubber Avenue, Naugatuck, Connecticut 06770
