SOUTHBURY- Catherine Ahern Spencer, 92, of Southbury, CT, formerly of Middlebury, CT, died peacefully at River Glen Health Care Center on Saturday, August 11, 2012. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Charles E. Spencer III.

She was born in Westerly, RI and attended the Mary C. Wheeler School, Ethel Walker School, Brown University and Radcliffe Graduate School. She was a member and a Treasurer of the Junior League of Waterbury, a President of the Women's Committee of the Mattatuck Museum and the first female President of the Mattatuck Museum. She was a member of the Waterbury Foundation; Highfield Country Club of Middlebury, CT; the Chilton Club of Boston, MA and the Mid Ocean Club of Bermuda.

She leaves behind her sister Cornelia Ahern Fry of Montecito, CA; her daughters Cornelia S. Ives of Boca Grande, FL; Olivia S. Tuttle and her husband Donald of Middlebury, CT; C. Elizabeth Spencer of Norwich, VT; her sons Charles E. Spencer IV and his wife Diane of Middlebury, CT and Richard V. Spencer of Wilson, WY. In addition, she leaves behind seven grandchildren: Tania T. Trumble of Johns Creek, GA; C. Spencer Tuttle of Westfield, NJ: Beecher C. Tuttle of Brooklyn, NY; Sarah W. Spencer of Charlestown, MA; Catherine E. Spencer of Charlestown, MA; Averil D. Spencer of Hyderabad, India; Pierce C. Spencer of San Diego, CA; four great grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, thirteen step-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the wonderful nursing staff at River Glen in Southbury, CT, for their dedicated care and support.

Arrangements- A Memorial Service for Catherine will be held at St. John of the Cross Church, 321 Whittemore Road, Middlebury 06762 on Saturday, August 25, 2012 at 11 AM. A private burial will be held in Grove Cemetery, Naugatuck. There are no calling hours. The Alderson Funeral Home of Waterbury, 9 Holmes Ave, 06710 is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Mattatuck Historical Society, 144 West Main Street, Waterbury, CT 06702.
