Barry S. Sutherland

Barry Sutherland, 69, of Cheshire, passed away April 2, 2021. He was the husband of Lisa (Nyberg) Sutherland.

Barry “Suds” Sutherland was born on May 23, 1951, in Waterbury, the son of the late Merle and Charlotte Mae (Carter) Sutherland. He was a 1970 graduate of Cheshire High School and a 2013 inductee into its hall of fame. A longtime Cheshire resident, Mr. Sutherland was the owner of Barry’s Automotive.

Barry’s interest in cars and all things mechanical began at an early age. He loved working on cars, racing cars, and restoring classics. He began his career at Genest Auto and then worked for the Special Vehicle Design Company. It was there he designed and built specialty muscle cars, including one for the original cannonball run and the Daytona 24-hour race. It was in 1982 he opened Barry’s Automotive alongside his wife Lisa. Besides working on cars, Barry enjoyed towing cars for the town of Cheshire where he got to spend time with the members of both the police and fire departments. He valued their service and friendship.

Barry was an avid softball and basketball player involved for many years in Cheshire’s recreation leagues. He was a fan of both NASCAR and the Boston Red Sox. Most importantly Barry cherished time that he was able to spend with his family. Included in his extended family were his many loyal customers and friends. He was loved by all and will be dearly missed.

Mr. Sutherland is survived by his daughters Bridgett Reeves, and her husband Darren, Rene Bandurski and her husband Joe; his sons Brian (Katie), Michael (Jenna) and Steven (Stacy); his granddaughter Madison Reeves and future granddaughter Scarlet Rose; his nephews Jeffery Sutherland, Donald Sutherland and Christian Nyberg; nieces, Cindi Jackson, Cara Sutherland and Amanda Nyberg. He is predeceased by his nephew Scott Luciani; sister Karen Luciani and brothers Robert, Darryl, Craig, Dean, and Duane.
